November, 2009 My Fellow Arrowmen, First, I want to extend my gratitude to all of you who helped make the Fall Reunion a success, whether it was as an elangomat, ceremonialist, advisor, etc. Your dedication and cheerful service helped to provide for, what I hope was, a truly awe-inspiring experience for our new Ordeal members. I would also like to thank Ray Kreienkamp for the exemplary job he did serving as the Lodge’s National and Section Chairman. As part of his job, he planned and organized the final C-5C Section Conclave that was held at Beaumont Scout Reservation on September 25-27, 2009. We all owe him a great deal of thanks for making the event a success!
As we begin yet another promising year, I would like to pose the following questions: What does it mean to be a member of the Order of the Arrow? What is the significance of wearing the pocket flap and the sash? As Order of the Arrow members, we are each called to live out a life that is in line with the Scout Oath and Law. Furthermore, we have committed ourselves to a life of cheerful service and self-denial. While we have concrete symbols, such as the sash and pocket flap, to demonstrate our commitment to these principles, ultimately our actions speak for who we are. Thus, this year, I challenge each of you to make your actions set you apart from the rest of your brothers. Embrace cheerful service and all that it has to offer! Don’t be afraid to take what the Order has taught you about the virtue of service and apply it in your everyday life, regardless of whether you are at a Scouting function or not. Remember to live by the words Allowat Sakima said during your Ordeal ceremony, “He alone is worthy to wear the arrow who will continue to serve his fellow man.”
